Believe it or not, you can inseminate your female yourself. This is not a $200.00 procedure. The shipper of the semen should include an insemination pipette, and the only thing you need is the syringe containing the sample, a helper to hold the female for you , and about 15 or 20 minutes of your time.
Very simply done, the first step is to make sure that the female is on a firm surface that is "skid free" Carpet works well, or even grass.....you get the idea. Once you have the female ready, it's now time to open the shipping container. Inside, you should find a syringe containing the semen, a pair of latex gloves, and pipette that is used to introduce the semen into the female.
Put the gloves on, and remove the cap from the tip of the syringe. Place the pipette on the syringe and expel enough semen to fill the pipett with the semen. Using your non-dominant hand, insert one finger that has been lubricated with water into the dogs vagina. Gently insert the pipette into the vagine over the top of your finger. The prevents you from inserting the pipette into the urine canal.
Extend the pipette into the vagina as far as it will go WITHOUT FORCING it. The semen is then expelled from the syringe, leaving the pipette in the vagina, remove the syringe and pull in enough air to clear the pipette of semen (ensuring that you get the entire sample). The pipette is then withdrawn, but the finger remains in the vagina.
Use your finger to "feather" (gently scrape in a backwards motion) the wall of the vagina. This is an important step as it simulated the "tie" and stimulates the vaginal walls forcing the semen towards the waiting eggs. After several minutes of this feathering, the finger is remvoed and the female should be positioned with her hind-end elevated. Make sure that you do not pick the female up by the abdomen, instead, lift her by gragging her back legs at the knees. After being elevated for 5 to 10 minutes, the female should be put in the dog box, or in a shipping crate for not less than an hour. She should not be permitted to urinate. If she needs to be loaded, make sure not to pick her up by the belly.....
That's it....that's all there is to it.....YOU CAN DO IT yourself. The only thing left is to circle the day on the calendar 63 days from today...and prepare for a litter of pups.
****This method is to be used ONLY for chilled or fresh semen. Frozen semen does not have the motility to cross the cerivix and MUST BE INSERTED DIRECTLY into the uterus.******
